Acoustic enclosure for the process industry

The Kimpton Acoustic team have recently completed the design and production of a new bespoke acoustic enclosure for the process industry. The client is British Rema for their CLM100 Rotary Classifier Mill Unit and it’s being designed and built for a client in Spain.

This type of mill is used for reducing and controlling particle size in the chemicals, metal powders, minerals, plastics or recycling industries.

With this particular application there was a twofold challenge to the brief. Firstly to reduce noise when the unit is installed in the factory environment for the protection of operating staff. Secondly, to dissipate heat, as the substrate is being milled at 100 degrees centigrade.

“The Kimpton Acoustics team created a bespoke acoustic enclosure for our CLM100 Rotary Classifier Mill Unit for a customer in Spain. The brief we set them gave them a number of challenges in that it needed to dissipate heat as well as reduce noise, whilst still retaining personnel access! All went exactly to plan and it’s being installed as we speak.”
Jose Carmelo Santana Perdomo – Project Engineer, British Rema

The solution, as you can see from some of the in-build images below was to design an enclosure made of a mild steel hollow section subframe with acoustic panels mounted to the frame. There are removable panels for easy access to the equipment and hinged doors for personnel access. The finished unit is then powder coated to offer long term protection for the steel work.

To solve the potential heat issues, the enclosure was designed with fan assisted ventilation, complete with attenuated inlets and outlet. These ensure a strong and controllable through flow of air, without the side-effect of unwanted noise, breaking out into the shop floor.

For ease of delivery and installation, the enclosure is designed to be lifted fully assembled, without the roof mounted outlet attenuator installed. Here you can see it loaded onto transport ready for delivery to the end customer.

As part of the contract, we also supplied separate silencers to be mounted to the process equipment independent of the enclosure. This has become increasingly common within process environments. As one machine is silenced, then it becomes ever more apparent that another is excessively noisy. The regulations on noise within the workplace are very clear and any sensible production business will pre-emptively reduce noise, before it begins to harm staff and potentially becomes a legal problem to solve.

And finally the completed enclosure, and additional silencers all loaded and ready to go

Machine noise reduction is a speciality of The Kimpton Acoustic team and our long and wide ranging experience in the process and other industries means that we have the answers to almost any machine noise reduction challenge.
